A Revolution in Compressor Oils: How Hoffmann Compressor Oils Boost Industrial Efficiency
This paper explores the applications of Hofmann compressor oil in modern industry and its significant impact on equipment performance.
The function of lubricating oil
Lubricating oil is a liquid lubricant used in various types of machinery to reduce friction and protect both the machinery and its components. Its primary functions include lubrication, cooling, rust prevention, cleaning, sealing, and shock absorption. Lubricating oil accounts for 85% of all lubricants, with an extensive variety of grades and types; global annual consumption currently stands at approximately 38 million tons. The general requirements for lubricating oils are:
What are the types of compressor oils?
Today, there are many types of compressor oils, and the base oils alone include mineral oil, second‑hydrogenated mineral oil, hydrogenated isomerized Group III base oil, natural‑gas‑derived Group III base oil, PAO, polyether, ester oils—including diesters and polyol esters—and silicone oil, among others.
How should compressor oil be properly replaced?
Most compressor manufacturers specify oil‑change intervals in their respective manuals. However, basing oil changes solely on operating hours is not entirely reasonable, as compressors of the same type can experience varying degrees of lubricant degradation depending on their operating conditions. Consequently, determining appropriate oil‑service intervals and establishing clear oil‑change criteria is a critically important issue.
Are all vehicles suitable for full‑synthetic motor oil?
Choosing the right type of engine oil for your car is quite important. Many people believe that fully synthetic oil is the best, so they opt for it in their vehicles.
Characteristics of Lubricating Oils
Reduce frictional resistance to save energy, minimize wear to extend machinery life, and enhance economic efficiency.
Precautions for Changing Lubricating Oil
Preventing Health Risks from Lubricating Oils Many petroleum products are harmful to human health. If they come into contact with the skin and are not promptly washed off, they may cause mild dermatitis or bumps; in more severe cases, they can lead to rashes or skin tumors. If ingested or inhaled, they may result in gastrointestinal disorders or pneumonia in mild cases, and in serious cases, even cancer. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid contaminating food with petroleum, preventing its entry into the respiratory tract, and refraining from getting oil all over one’s body or spilling it on the ground. Such practices not only waste resources but also compromise personal hygiene. Animal studies have shown that refined mineral‑oil lubricants exhibit relatively low toxicity; however, the addition of additives increases their potential hazards, necessitating careful protective measures. Even if a new lubricant is non‑toxic, its degradation and contamination during use can significantly raise its risks. Thus, it is essential to avoid skin contact and, above all, to refrain from inhaling or ingesting the substance. If accidental exposure occurs, rinse the affected area thoroughly with clean water immediately. Disposal of Used Oil The lubricating oil that has been replaced is no longer suitable for reuse and must be disposed of as waste oil. Such waste oil should be handled properly to prevent environmental pollution.
Basic Properties of Lubricating Oils and Fats
Lubricating oil is a technology-intensive product, consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, and its actual performance in service results from the combined effects of intricate physical and chemical processes. The fundamental properties of lubricating oil encompass general physicochemical characteristics, specialized physicochemical properties, and simulated bench‑test evaluations.
Not changing the compressor oil for a long time?
The compressor’s lubrication and protection performance has deteriorated, shortening its service life.
The True Service Life of Compressor Oil
The service life of screw compressor oil should be the minimum duration under normal operating conditions. Accurately determining the oil’s service interval is challenging, and manufacturers’ specifications vary. Generally, the recommended intervals are as follows: Group I mineral oils—2,000 hours; Group II mineral oils—up to 4,000 hours (later reduced to 2,000); Group III mineral oils—up to 6,000 hours (later reduced to 4,000); PAO synthetic oils—up to 8,000 hours (though some sources cite 6,000); and polyol ester oils—up to 12,000 hours (with some suggesting 8,000).
